  1. The 19th Meeting of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) was held under the chairmanship of the Union Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Bhupender Yadav.

i.The environment minister launched an action plan for the reintroduction, protection, and conservation of  7 major big cats in India including the cheetah, which has become extinct in independent India.

4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of multiple projects in Somnath, Gujarat via video conferencing.

  1. Uttar Pradesh government has renamed a landmark freedom movement called “Kakori Train Conspiracy” as “Kakori Train Action” and paid tributes to the revolutionaries who were hanged for robbing a train at Kakori in Uttar Pradesh.

• It was a train robbery that took place on August 9, 1925, in a village called Kakori near Lucknow during the Indian Independence Movement against British Raj. The robbery was organized by Hindustan Republican Association (HRA).

• Freedom fighters Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaqulla Khan, and Roshan Singh were hanged to death on December 19, 1927, for their involvement in Kakori robbery.

3. India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier (IAC) Vikrant has completed its five-day maiden sea trials from August 4, 2021, from Kochi to 8, 2021.

• Vikrant is expected to be commissioned into the Indian Navy in 2022

• Once it enters service with the Indian Navy, the warship will be called as INS Vikrant

• This is the first as well as largest and most complex aircraft carrier designed and built in India

• Currently, India has only one aircraft carrier, namely INS Vikramaditya made by Russia

4. ‘Pani Maah’ or water month has been launched in Ladakh to inform villagers about the importance of clean water.

• The Ladakh government has also announced a reward of Rs 2.5 million for the first block in each district that achieves the status of ‘Har Ghar Jal’

• Pani Maah campaign will adopt a three-pronged approach — focussing on water quality testing, planning and strategizing water supply, and seamless functioning of Pani Sabha in villages.

5. The first Heart Failure Biobank in the country has come up at the National Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in HF (CARE-HF) at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Kerala.

• The Biobank is open to study genetic, metabolomics and proteomic markers of health outcomes in heart-failure patients.

• Biobanks are an important resource of collections of high-quality biological human samples that can be used to understand molecular pathways and to improve the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of heart failure.

2. Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has constructed World’s highest motorable road at Umlingla Pass in eastern Ladakh.

• It is a 52-km-long tarmac road at Umlingla Pass and has been constructed at an altitude of 19,300 feet.

• Prior to this, highest motorable road was in Bolivia at 18,953 ft, connecting to its volcano Uturuncu.

• The black top road at Umlingla Pass will now help to enhance socio-economic condition and promote tourism in Ladakh

3. Hiroshima Day is being observed every year on August 6 to commemorate the day in 1945 when an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima by United States, followed by another drop on the city of Nagasaki on August 9.

4. Supreme Court has decided that the Governor of a State can pardon prisoners, including death sentence, even before they have served a minimum 14 years of prison sentence.

• Section 433A CrPC mandates that a prisoner’s sentence can be remitted only after 14 years of jail
